Preserving stories of music and culture from the Windrush generation
Stories from the Windrush generation are at risk of being lost forever. Thanks to National Lottery players, Windrush: The Music, The Sound, The Legacy will uncover the impact of the Windrush migration within the local area.
Run by Diversity Music Community 1st, the project will engage Caribbean-born DJs, musicians and community leaders to collect oral histories. These important stories will be digitised through videos and podcasts and shared via a dedicated website to ensure they are saved for future generations. A team of volunteers will research local archives, online resources and libraries to support the stories told by participants.
For us, it all starts with music, but what truly grows is connection, the relationships, the sense of belonging and the community we build together.
Wayne Blake, Chair Director of Diversity Music Community 1st
Renowned singer Beverley Knight announced the award to the project, as part of The National Lottery’s ‘Because of You’ campaign, which celebrates the impact of National Lottery players and the extraordinary people behind the projects.
